Creation and Development of the Battlefields Park

Since 1908

The National Battlefields Commission was formed in 1908 and given a mandate to develop the Battlefields Park as a historic park. Discover the history of how this urban park was developed into the premier gathering place in Québec City and the major events it hosted throughout the 20th century.

The creation of the Battlefields Park and the National Battlefields Commission

Created on March 17, 1908, the Commission's initial mandate was to organize Québec City's tricentennial celebrations and convert the site of the battles of 1759 and 1760 into a public park.

Since then, it has continued its mandate to preserve and enhance this great urban and historical park, which includes the Plains of Abraham and Des Braves Park.

The Plains of Abraham

A major legacy of the Quebec Tercentenary

In 1908, the Plains of Abraham and Québec City became the stage for a spectacular event: the city’s 300th anniversary celebrations. For the people of Québec City and the Canadian government, this milestone was the perfect chance to create a sprawling urban park. The festivities were nothing short of grand, drawing thousands of visitors and capturing the attention of not just the city, but all of Canada and the wider British Empire.
